The CN Tower found its way onto a poster for a big-budget Hollywood movie

It’s a bird… it’s a plane… it’s Birdman? And he’s on the CN Tower?

We’ll forgive you if you’re unfamiliar with Birdman. After all, he’s not your typical Marvel or DC comic book superhero. Instead, Birdman is an upcoming black comedy staring Michael Keaton.

Now, before anyone gets excited: this poster is not being used to promote the movie throughout the United States. Toronto is just one of several North American cities to get its own poster with the titular Birdman standing on local landmarks. Cities like Seattle, San Francisco and Boston also got their own posters. One assumes the film’s distributors decided that appealing to a local market’s sense of civic pride was a good marketing strategy. It certainly piqued my interest in the movie.

The movie, starting the aforementioned Michael Keaton—as well as several other notable stars such as Emma Stone, Edward Norton, Naomi Watts and Zach Galifanakis—is about Keaton’s character, washed up actor Riggan Thomson, last ditch attempt to relaunch his career. Thomson writes and stages a broadway play that has him revisit his career defining role as the superhero Birdman. As the opening of the play approaches, however, Keaton’s character comes into conflict with his own ego and with his inadequacies as a husband and father to his wife and daughter.

Following Birdman’s opening at the Venice Film Festival, critics showered it with praise. It currently has a 93% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
